Premillennialism is the belief that Jesus will come to Earth, conquer the world, and literally reign over all the nations at the beginning of the millennial kingdom. Postmillennialism is the belief that the church is responsible for spiritually conquering the world and preparing it for the coming . A few years ago I preached in chapel at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary on the second coming of Jesus. After surveying briefly Postmillennialism, Amillennialism, and Premillennialism, I walked through some Old Testament texts in Isaiah, Acts , and Revelation , showing why Christ’s second coming should be viewed as premillennial.

This differs from dispensationalists, who maintain that the second coming of Christ will involve a secret return for the church prior to the tribulation followed by his visible return after seven years. Thus the first coming and the second coming of Christ are pictured in the same Scriptural context. Isaiah as quoted in part by Christ in Luke is an illustration of this. In Christ’s Second Coming, Brown defines premillennialism as a theory that advocates that Christ will soon come, not to carry on in person and in power the work of converting and saving men, but to close the dispensation of grace and introduce an eternal state of retribution. Instead, Brown advocates the theory that there will be—before Christ’s coming—an estimated thousand years when.
The premillennial position is, in a word, that Christ is coming back to the world before the establishment of the millennial kingdom. Many believe that Christ is coming back to take the church to heaven first. This will be followed by a time of great trouble in the world while the church is.
